Expression Guest Registry vs FuneralGuestbook: the stationery house and the software company

Messenger's Expression Guest Registry has been on the App Store since 2012 and comes with a print business attached. If you already buy Messenger stationery that's a real advantage. Here's the honest comparison, and what neither of us publishes.

Expression Guest Registry was first released on Apple’s App Store in November 2012. The next-oldest product in this category arrived in 2023. That head start is worth taking seriously, and so is what’s attached to it: Expression comes from a funeral supply house, not a software company.

We make FuneralGuestbook. Everything about Expression below is quoted from Messenger’s own product page and Apple’s store record, read in August 2026.

What Expression is

Messenger LLC sells stationery, keepsakes, urns and register books. Expression is the iPad front end that feeds that print business — in their words, a system “built for the iPad platform” that “results in professional-looking registration products that can be printed at the funeral home” and lets a funeral home “reach out with emails to guests, generate pre-need leads, facilitate donations with credit cards, and design outstanding registry, memorial and heirloom products.”

The feature set is broad: zip-code auto-population of city and state, English, Spanish and French, multi-service support, credit-card memorial donations through Xpress Donations, a floral tribute record, an optional pre-need lead checkbox, and in-house printing of registry pages in three sizes. Their Guest Memory feature “allows repeat guests to populate their names and addresses” — genuinely thoughtful for the families who attend more than one service at the same funeral home.

Hardware is “available in both tabletop and free-standing pedestal iPad enclosures,” in white metal or wood.

And it is actively maintained. Apple’s record shows version 3.5.4, updated April 2026. Anyone telling you this is abandoned software hasn’t checked. One line on their product page has aged, though, and it’s worth knowing if you read it as a reason to stop looking: it says Expression “is the only digital registry solution available directly from the Apple App Store.” That was presumably true when it was written. FuneralScreen’s registry app has been on the store since August 2023, and ours since July 2026.

The advantage we can’t match

If you already buy Messenger products, Expression means one vendor for the software and the print. Registry pages, memorial products and heirlooms come from the same relationship, on the same invoice, from a company your funeral home may have bought from for decades.

We don’t print anything. We export a PDF, a spreadsheet, and address labels for the guests who left a mailing address. If what you want is a finished keepsake book that arrives, Messenger does that and we don’t.

There’s also this, from their own guidance on running the stand, which is better than most of the category’s:

“We always recommend that a funeral home staff member be present to assist those who may need help. Computers may be efficient and effective, but they cannot fully replace that personal touch funeral directors provide.”

That is a software vendor telling you to keep a person at the register stand. They’re right, and we’d say the same.

What Expression doesn’t publish

Pricing. Their site names two maintenance plans and says both “allow usage at up to three locations, for an unlimited number of services,” with no figure anywhere on their site, Messenger’s site, or the App Store listing. You call 800.827.5151 and ask.

We publish: $79/month for up to 125 services a year, $149 up to 250, $299 up to 500, two weeks free, no contract — and every location you run rides the same plan, on one bill.

We can’t tell you which is cheaper, because we don’t know what theirs costs. What we can tell you is the figure to hold against theirs. Both of their plans cover up to three locations, and locations don’t move our price at all — services do. So add up what your three chapels hold in a year: 250 services across all of them is $149 a month, 500 is $299. The comparison at three locations is a real one worth making; you just have to make the call to make it.

What’s different here

The guest chooses: handwriting or typing. A guest signs with a stylus or a finger the way they’d sign a paper register, or taps a line and types — the page opens in pen, and either way the entry becomes structured contact details. Expression’s guests type into a form with zip-code assistance. Both produce a usable list; the difference is that at our stand the guest picks, so someone who would rather not hold a stylus still leaves their own name.

Offline. Our iPad takes signatures with no connection at all and syncs when it finds one.

A published price, which is the section above.

This one turns on whether print is central to what you sell

Expression is a stationery house’s software, and that isn’t a criticism — it’s the design. It is why the two of us suit different funeral homes rather than competing on a feature grid.

If registry pages, memorial products and keepsake books are part of what families buy from you, Expression is software and print from one relationship, on one invoice, from a supplier you may already trust. That is a genuinely different offer from ours and the sensible one for that funeral home.

If print isn’t central to the business — if the registry’s job is to hand you a clean list and get the acknowledgments out fast — then what you’re weighing is a published price against a phone call, signing that works without Wi-Fi, and a guest who can choose handwriting or typing rather than only a form.

A funeral home built around beautiful printed keepsakes and a funeral home built around fast, clean aftercare are different businesses. They should buy different software, and we’d rather you bought the right one.

Every price and quotation here was read from the named vendor’s own published pages in August 2026. This category changes; if something has gone out of date, tell us and we’ll correct it.
